Dorridge & District Gardening Club & Bentley Heath Allotments
Unfortunately owing to the COVID19 restrictions it has been necessary to cancel all talks, meetings and plant sales through to the end of 2020. The Annual Summer Show planned for August also will not go ahead.
The allotments are open but please respect social distancing at all times and take extra care with handwashing, for example when using the water taps
The club holds monthly meetings from September to May inclusive at Bentley Heath Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7.30 pm. There are talks on a variety of gardening topics. On average 40-50 members attend the meetings which includes a break for refreshments and an opportunity to chat. There are monthly competitions based on seasonal flowers and vegetables with trophies being awarded in December (Click for programme and details of competitions). The club is a member of the Royal Horticultural Society.
We have a break in the summer months from June to August. At Christmas we hold a special meeting with a speaker with wine and mince pies. We also hold an informal photographic competition of gardens you may have visited or your own garden. The categories are Close up and Landscape.
The club is also responsible for the administration of the allotment site at Bentley Heath. The allotments are sited at the rear of Bentley Heath Community Centre and the entrance is off Packwood Close. These allotments are owned by Solihull Council but managed by the Club. There are some 40 allotments, many of which are split into half plots. It's a great way to meet friendly people with similar interests and to learn more about gardening and growing your own fruit, vegetables and flowers. In the past we have won the competition for best allotment site in Solihull and several members have won individual awards for best allotment. Go to the Allotments page for more information.
The judging of the allotments takes place at the beginning of July and 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes are awarded for the best full and half plots.
